Life in Canberra as a Student

All you need to know about Australia's capital - more often than not unheard of outside of Australia.

Created in response to Melbourne and Sydney carrying on and arguing with each other over who should play the role of Australia's capital, Canberra is home to Australia's house of legislation, the legendary and iconic Parliament House. The only town-planned city in the country, the in-land capital is often lampooned by it's sun-soaked, sea-sprayed coastal neighbours, however Canberra is much loved by it's many public servants who work tirelessly for the Commonwealth of Australia. Coming to Canberra to study? Study Canberra is a great place to start.

We've put together below some key things you need to know about the city in general and life in Canberra as a student.

Where the Students Live

Acton

Home to the Australian National University, Acton is one of the bigger neighbourhoods of Canberra. Showing off Canberra's more eclectic side, you'll find this artsy area populated with students aplenty.

Braddon

Close enough to the centre of Canberra, yet just far away enough that you'll have your own space for some peace and quiet, Braddon is a pretty hip area. Live music can often be heard here and beer can regularly be consumed from new up and coming microbreweries. If you're looking for a bit of fun, Braddon is the place to be!

The Sights of Canberra

Parliament House (Canberra)

Meticulously designed and costing a whopping $1.1 billion in 1988 to build, this is the place where Australia's senators and members congregate to determine the future of the country. Experience robust Australian democracy in action!

The Australian War Memorial (Campbell)

A stunning monument and tribute to commemorating the sacrifice of the many Australians who served and lost their lives in times of conflict, this is a world-class, yet somber memorial, and well worth a visit too.

Australian Chamber Orchestra (Canberra)

Australia's most dynamic and critically acclaimed orchestra. "The energy and vibe of a rock band with the ability of a crack classical chamber group" - Washington Post. Take a friend for free too with our exclusive 2 for 1 offer!
